Section Description

How do movies, TV, and social media dictate how we expect people to communicate? Our ideas about "typical" communication is often shaped as much by the screen as by real-life interactions. This course explores the wide range of human communication and examines how media influences our perceptions of people whose communication styles, approaches, or abilities differ from societal expectations. Through media analysis, community engagement, and self-reflection, we will uncover the biases behind these portrayals and challenge the way we think about human connection.

The Grand Friends Program is a highlight of this course and a partnership with the UVM Center on Aging. As a student in CSD 1250, you and a classmate will be matched with a "Grand Friend", an older adult volunteer who serves as a thought partner and mentor throughout the semester. You will meet as a small group at least four times to engage in intergenerational dialogue, bridging the gap between classroom theory and lived experience. These meetings are designed to be mutually rewarding, offering a unique space for connection and reflection across generations.

Course Objectives: Compare the clinical characteristics of communication differences and disorders with their portrayals in popular media. Analyze how media narratives interact with the lived experiences of individuals. Discuss the power of popular media in shaping public attitudes and societal inclusion. Reflect on personal biases to increase self-awareness and cultural humility. Create an educational artifact that promotes inclusive narratives and media responsibility.
