Section Description
Designed for History majors, this course’s main purposes are to enhance your understanding of the work historians do and your ability to do that work yourself. It is essentially a hands-on practicum, designed to sharpen your most important skills: assessing the work of other historians; conducting your own historical research, including finding materials in libraries and on-line and interpreting those materials; presenting your findings and interpretations in clear, effective prose, using the accepted forms of writing, citation, and bibliography. To accomplish these broad goals, this particular section of the course will frequently use materials about or generated in Washington DC.
The course will help you develop your own personal intelligence so you can do work in History as efficiently as possible, but also so you can build your capacity to recognize when technology designed to save labor is performing incorrectly and to scrutinize claims to truth and authenticity. Regular attendance is important. Our in-class time will mainly be spent doing activities, and we will be in Howe Library with some regularity. Course planning is still in progress, but an in-person practical final exam during exam week is likely.
The course carries the WIL2 designation for Catamount Core.
The class is for History majors, but History minors and Secondary Education Social Studies majors are welcome to request overrides if there are seats available in the week before classes start and/or during the add/drop period.
