Survey of literary and cultural theory introducing a variety of major approaches to the interpretation of literature. Required for all English majors and minors. Pre/Co-requisite: ENGL 1500.

Section Description

This course has a feminist/ queer/ trans focus and can count toward GSWS/ SGIS majors and minors. Like other sections of ENGS 2000, it introduces key terms, concepts, and methods that prepare students for upper-level English classes. We will survey psychoanalytic, feminist, Marxist, decolonial, structuralist and post-structuralist approaches to literature, as well as critical race theory. In the process, we will discuss concepts essential to literary studies, such as close reading, authorial intent, historicism, indeterminacy, narrative form, and ideology. Each unit will conclude with a reading that shows how recent feminist, queer and/or trans theory has grown out of older theoretical traditions.

Section Expectation

Two short essays (5-7 pages), short reading responses, and faithful attendance and participation in class discussion.
