Section Description

Outdoor Recreation Planning focuses on the planning principles and practices used to manage recreation resources on public and private lands. We’ll traverse the gradient from local- to national-level planning for recreation, focusing on wildland and frontcountry settings, developed and dispersed recreation sites…and everything in between. We’ll survey the frameworks, tools, and approaches that outdoor recreation planners use to promote equitable access to recreation sources while stewarding ecosystems. By the end of the semester, you’ll be able to:
1. explain how outdoor recreation planning has evolved in the last century
2. understand different planning approaches used by federal, state, and local entities that manage recreation
3. access tools and data to describe visitation patterns
4. analyze the supply of recreation resources in a planning area
5. understand how recreation planning integrates with other planning activities
6. critically analyze a range of social, ecological, economic, and human health issues relevant to recreation planning
