Section Description

This course serves as an introduction to the field of Early Intervention (EI) and is designed for students interested in serving infants and toddler with and at risk for developmental delays or disabilities and their families. This course focuses on supporting young children in the natural environment with a routines-based and family-centered approach. Students will learn about the impact of disabilities on the development of infants and toddlers and practices to promote development. An overview of the history, trends, legal issues and policies impacting EI will be provided. Information will be covered on recommended and evidence-based practices for the following topics: collaboration, developmental care in the NICU, prematurity, transition planning, poverty, culturally responsive early intervention, early childhood outcomes and the development of Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs), the coaching model of early intervention, Routines Based Interviews (RBI), Infant Toddler Developmental Assessments (IDA-2), screening for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the documentation and timelines necessary for Part C services. In addition, students will research a variety of etiologies and make connections with intervention strategies and supports.

The learning objectives for this course are aligned with professional standards from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and the initial special education early childhood specialty set from the Division for Early Childhood (DEC).
