Section Description

In this course students will learn about the history and culture of ancient Greece from the Early Bronze Age through the Classical Period and the Roman Empire (roughly 3000 BCE to 200 CE). This course will be based in Greece, which will be our classroom for roughly three weeks. Through close readings of primary source texts pertinent to the ancient sites we visit, students will learn to synthesize historical, literary, and archaeological evidence to better understand the complex tapestry of events, identities, and voices of ancient Greece. Readings will combine primary sources (in English) such as Homer, Hesiod, Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Aeschylus, Euripides, Aristophanes, and Pausanias as well as modern scholarship and introductions to the archaeology and material culture of ancient Greece.

A typical day will include approximately two sites visits with time for homework in the evening. Examples of site visits include, but are not limited to, the Acropolis and Agora in Athens, Eleusis (the Eleusinian Mysteries), Thebes, Delphi (the oracle of Apollo), Olympia (home of the Olympic Games), Epidauros (sanctuary of Ascelpius), Mycenae and Tiryns (Bronze Age sites), Aegina, and Corinth. In addition to archaeological sites, students will visit several archaeological museums, including the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. There will also be opportunities to hike, swim, and explore neolithic caves! Students are expected to deliver short presentations about a topic on site. These topics will be assigned in advance. Students will be staying in shared hotel rooms in the following cities: Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Nafplio, and Aegina.

Students are expected to attend all site visits and complete all assigned work for the course.
