Section Description
This introductory course demonstrates the basic knowledge and skills required to recognize, assess and manage common medical problems, trauma and environmental emergencies in the wilderness or austere environment. Specifically designed for individuals engaged in outdoor recreation or education, it focuses on safety and prevention, basic assessment to identify life threatening and non-life-threatening emergencies, management of these problems and decision making about the next level of care. A certification in Wilderness First Aid (WFA) will be awarded from the University of Vermont upon successful completion of the requirements, including a scenario-based written exam and demonstration of skills competency, as well as proof of Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association. *Important: the BLS certification is not offered during this summer course. Students may take HLTH 1990 successfully without a BLS certification, however they will not be eligible to receive the WFA certification document.
Section Expectation
This course run for 2 days, 8-hours each day, on May 21st and 22nd. There will be some didactic instruction, followed by an abundance of hands-on skills development and practice. Most of the skills will be performed out in the "field", at a location on-campus but with hints of wilderness feel. Students are expected to be prepared for outdoor activity, rain or shine!
Evaluation
Lab participation and skills practice. Team scenario-based written exam and demonstration of skills competency.
