Section Description
Observational Architecture is an intensive studio course focused on drawing the built environment through direct observation. Working from architectural structures, interior and exterior spaces, and constructed forms, students will investigate the fundamental principles of drawing as they relate to structure, proportion, perspective, light, and spatial relationships.
Through a range of media including graphite, charcoal, ink, and collage, students will develop perceptual awareness, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to translate architectural forms into clear visual drafts on paper. Emphasis is placed on sighting/measurement, perspective, spatial analysis, value structure, and compositional clarity.
Section Expectation
Because this is a summer session, the course is immersive and accelerated. Students should expect a rigorous pace and sustained daily engagement with drawing practice.
Evaluation
Even in an online format, this course requires a studio mindset. Students are expected to:
Draw consistently and revise frequently
Work from direct observation whenever possible
Complete preparatory studies before final drawings
Engage respectfully and constructively in critiques
Maintain clear documentation of process. Assessment is based on growth, engagement, and the quality of visual problem-solving. Evaluation is based in effort shown in quantity rather than quality shown in talent.
