Section Description

This 3-credit course focuses on the analysis, design, and construction of geotechnical systems, including foundations and earth-retaining structures for tunnels, bridges, buildings, pipelines, highways, and marine infrastructure. Prerequisite: CEE 3800/3815.

Section Expectation

By the end of the course, students will be able to: • Interpret subsurface exploration data to assess soil strength and deformation characteristics for design applications. • Determine appropriate use cases for shallow and deep foundations. • Design shallow and deep foundations to meet horizontal and vertical load requirements and control deformations. • Select and design suitable earth retention systems based on site conditions. • Explain key construction considerations in foundation and earth retention design and specification. • Recommend testing, quality control, and quality assurance practices for foundations and earth retention. This course follows an active-learning format. Students are expected to complete assigned readings and homework prior to each class and engage fully in class activities. Creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment is a shared responsibility for this course.
