Section Description

No matter what one believes about New Orleans, one truth is that there’s no city quite like it. The Northernmost city of the Caribbean has been a melting pot since long before the United States of America was even an idea, and despite the centuries of bad laws and climate catastrophes, it’s still here. Though Hurricane Katrina made landfall over twenty years ago, its attendant human-made disaster is still happening and taking many forms: neighborhoods flipped, histories being rewritten, and unique subcultures fading. This 2-credit course, which can be taken as an extension to Dr. Sonnichsen’s GEOG 1770: Geography of Race & Ethnicity in the United States, focuses on key concepts in urban, musical, historical, and environmental geography. Through a variety of site visits, collaboration with local archives, and experiential learning, this course will provide students with a lived experience of a city in constant flux.

Section Expectation

This course will meet in New Orleans between Sunday March 8 - Saturday, March 14th, with some advance reading and viewing expectations. There will also be materials due in the weeks following our return to campus in March.

Evaluation

This travel course will largely be evaluated based on on-the-ground participation and a collaborative project based on that work. More details, including the provisional syllabus, can be found at the CAS Domestic Study webpage
