About SOC 2210 A
Studies different theoretical approaches to deviance and social control, empirical patterns of deviant behaviors, and temporal, spatial, and cultural variations in these patterns, in a global context. Prerequisite: Three hours of Sociology or Global and Regional Studies.

Section Description
In a global context, this course seeks to identify, analyze, and explain different forms of deviant behavior; how society creates, or responds to it. Its main focus is on what sociologists call “oppressive othering”: social agents ascribe deviant characteristics onto others (as inferior or dangerous) based on their ideas or beliefs, oppress them, and justify their oppression as a necessary and appropriate response to deviance.
In past semesters, topics have included
1. international terrorism,
2. ethno-nationalism,
3. global government surveillance,
4. sexual abuse in organizations,
5. global income and wealth inequality resulting from international relations,
6. disability as deviance around the world,
7. repression of rights of LGBTQ,
8. trafficking,
9. genocide,
10. global migration and refugees/immigrants as "others,"
11. tribalism and new social media: The making of outsiders
Section Expectation
Students are expected to spend approximately 3 times the time spent in class on studying outside of class. Therefore, 150 minutes of class per week = 450 minutes of study outside of class.
Evaluation
A syllabus will be sent to all registered students one week before classes begin. This will include all readings required for purchase. Evaluation of learning may include objective exams, weekly online quizzes, one paper, and participation.
