Section Description

In a global context, this course seeks to identify, analyze, and explain different forms of deviant behavior; how society creates, or responds to it. Its main focus is on what sociologists call “oppressive othering”: social agents ascribe deviant characteristics onto others (as inferior or dangerous) based on their ideas or beliefs, oppress them, and justify their oppression as a necessary and appropriate response to deviance. In past semesters, topics have included 1. international terrorism, 2. ethno-nationalism, 3. global government surveillance, 4. sexual abuse in organizations, 5. global income and wealth inequality resulting from international relations, 6. disability as deviance around the world, 7. repression of rights of LGBTQ, 8. trafficking, 9. genocide, 10. global migration and refugees/immigrants as "others," 11. tribalism and new social media: The making of outsiders
