Section Description

The course takes an in-depth view of the varied and contested relationship between crime and cities, drawing on insights from urban and political sociology, criminology and law, and social and spatial control. The course will cover a range of key studies in the field with an emphasis on urban ethnography in major US cities in comparative perspective with cities from around the world, including of the Global South.

Section Expectation

Learning Objectives for this course include: - Critical analysis of foundational and contemporary texts within in the field - Reflect on main concepts and contemporary debates for further studies in the field - Develop a comparative framework across cities in the US and worldwide - Develop critical analytical skills through class readings, discussions, and writing assignments Seminar with emphasis on discussion. Section expectations include class readings, in-class participation and discussion, presentation, and papers. All course readings and materials will be available on the course website.

Evaluation

Attendance and participation, 2 x reflection papers (300-500 words max), 1 x class paper (2000 words max), 1 x student-led discussion (in pairs), final paper (2500 words max)
