Section Description

“How can you not be? Is there any question that drives the found footage filmmaker more than this one?” Mike Hoolboom, Found Footage Magazine This class will explore the creation of film/video work using existing footage as its source. We'll be creating new work from old materials. We'll scrape some of the digital bowels of the Internet and the analogue treasures of junk stores, eBay and garages. And we'll think about the nature of archives - both institutions and accidents. Expect to work with pleasure. The course is a production course. We'll watch films, converse with filmmakers and archivists, and make our own films as individuals and as a group. At the end of the semester we'll present finished work in an outdoor projection of our own design. In addition to participation in the class you will maintain a journal of all films screened and film/video work produced. Creative work assigned during the course is designed to engage you in the philosophical and aesthetic questions being raised through screenings, readings and class discussion. COURSE OUTCOMES • Students will analyze films and videos created out of existing material and be able to distinguish the historical and artisitic tradition the work draws on. • Students will be able to describe the techniques used to create films studied during the semester. • And, students will be able to interpret how the films and videos we study relate to the cultural context out of which they emerge. • Students will communicate their own ideas through creative projects. Through presentation they will analyze how their work relates to other work created in the class.
