About MU 3320 A
Composing and arranging for big band. Practice in techniques of jazz arranging and study of historic works. Final project is jazz standard arranged for big band, read by the UVM Jazz Ensemble. Prerequisite: MU 2320 or MU 2313 or instructor permission.

Section Description
Introduction to concepts and techniques used in big band jazz arranging and composition through study of historic works and through numerous small projects designed to provide practice in treatment of pitch and rhythm. Includes instrument ranges, chord spellings, harmonic voicings (e.g., 4-part close, and 5-part drop 2 and 4), melody and countermelody, pads, shout chorus, sax soli, rhythm section writing, standard forms. Listening assignments (including listening journals) and score analysis. Final project involves a live reading of a full arrangement, with parts copied out, for traditional 17-piece big band.

Prerequisite: MU 2320 Jazz Harmony, or MU 2313 Harmony and Form II, or instructor's permission.
