Section Description

This course provides an introduction to the scientific methods used in psychological research, emphasizing the logic of research design, measurement, and statistical inference. Students learn how psychologists generate and test hypotheses, collect and analyze data, and interpret findings within ethical and theoretical frameworks. The course covers experimental, correlational, and observational methodologies, as well as issues of reliability, validity, and replicability in psychological science. The accompanying laboratory component provides hands-on experience in designing, conducting, analyzing, and reporting empirical studies. Students work collaboratively to develop research questions, apply appropriate methodological and basic statistical techniques, and present their findings in written and oral formats consistent with APA style.

Students are responsible for completing assigned readings before class, participating in discussions and group exercises, and submitting all homework and lab assignments on time. Late work may be penalized unless prior arrangements are made due to documented circumstances.

Evaluation

Course evaluation will be based on multiple forms of assessment designed to reflect both conceptual understanding and practical research skills. These may include: Homework and laboratory assignments In-class quizzes Midterm and/or final exams Research projects and written reports Class participation and engagement Final grades will reflect a balanced combination of performance across these components. Consistent attendance, timely submission of work, and steady engagement throughout the semester are essential to performing well in the course.
