English: Queer and Trans Theory

Advanced study in literary and cultural theory. Representative topics: Feminist Memory; Re-disciplining the History of Literature and the Literature of History. May be repeated for credit with different content. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals that may exceed four years. Credit not awarded for both ENGL 3010 and ENGL 5010. This seminar offers an overview of LGBTQ+ theory from the 1970s to the present. Its approach is historical, tracing the origins of today's heated debates and important questions around sexuality and gender identity. Our other historical project will be a search for a "usable past"--that is, knowledge that will help us navigate our current difficult times. Readings will probably include Jack Halberstam. Dean Spade, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Judith Butler, Sandy Stone, Audre Lorde, Susan Stryker, C. Riley Snorton, Jules Gill-Peterson, Michel Foucault, Barbara Smith, Eli Clare, Gloria Anzaldúa, and more.

One long essay (12-15 pages), frequent short reading response posts, attendance, and discussion.
