Section Description

Writing Memoir will mix craft and theory discussions of the genre, close readings of classic and contemporary examples/models, student writing exercises/prompts, and a workshop for an extensive and original memoir creative writing project by each student. We will dwell on aesthetics, ethics, subjecthood, the philosophy of the representative act and what we mean by "truth," the unavoidable fictions of the writing "I" and the remembered and researched past in narrative, and the porous borders and boundaries of this slippery and often innovative genre. This course is running in conjunction with the senior seminar "Reading Memoir." Students do not need to sign up for both courses, but a more in-depth learning experience is possible if they do.

Section Expectation

Weekly readings and short critical and creative writing assignments; an extended writing project to be to drafted, critiqued, and extensively revised; peer feedback and editing of original creative work.

Evaluation

Grade is based on participation and a portfolio of revised writing.
