Section Description

This course explores the nature and analysis of spatial data. Intended to develop both a conceptual and practical understanding of geographical problems, the course builds on basic principles to investigate approaches to spatial data acquisition, representation, and analysis. Topics covered in the course relate to fundamental themes in geography, including concepts of location, scale, representation, proximity, and spatial contingency. Students will apply concepts and gain technical skills through computer-based mapping and analysis projects utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related technologies. We will also explore key problems in the application of this technology, including error, uncertainty, classification, and personal privacy. At the conclusion of this course, students will be familiar with cartographic and analysis tools available in GIS software, have an appreciation of the many applications of this technology, and be able to critically assess the limitations of representing geographical phenomena using GIS.
