Section Description
Central European intellectuals had created a haven of liberal democracy by end of World War I. A large number of them were Jewish, and they became the driving forces of academic, political, and economic success as almost every European country fell to authoritarian leaders in the footsteps of fascism. This course is exploring what Czech philosopher Felix Weltsch called a "religion of freedom" out of the late-nineteenth-century mystical Jewish traditions and their development into new worldviews until the dawn World War 2.
Section Expectation
Reading and discussing literary works from philosophy to poetry.
Evaluation
Weekly conversations and final essay
