Exploration of modern and contemporary Japanese literary works in translation from the late nineteenth to early twenty-first century. Pre/Co-requisite: A Catamount Core WIL1 course.

Section Description
The course will introduce students to major writers, themes, concerns, and movements in Japanese literature from 1868 to the early 21st century. Furthermore, the course is designed to sharpen students’ analytic and communication skills through the reading, analysis and discussion of literary texts, while increasing their contextual knowledge of Japanese literary trends and concerns in relation to social and historical events in Japan. At the end of the course students will be familiar with the most significant Japanese literary figures and be able to contextualize literary themes and concerns within appropriate historical contexts. Major authors covered include Natsume Soseki, Kawabata Yasunari, Yukio Mishima, Oe Kenzaburo, Banana Yoshimoto, & Murakami Haruki
Section Expectation
This is a synchronous online course, please come prepared to engage (please turn on your camera) and participate in the class discussions. There will also be an online discussion board (Yellow Dig) students are expected to make weekly contributions to.
