Section Description

Digital artmaking course that introduces various software applications to create artworks for function, concept, design, or abstraction. 2D image-making techniques with Adobe Creative Suite serves as a foundation; the course leads into digital/outsourced fabrication and ends with 3D graphic design using Blender/Autodesk Maya. Students will be expected to identify their software of choice and develop the capability to crossover between 2D and 3D design to create digital imagery and apply skills to a myriad of mediums (including acrylic sheet, wood panel, fabric, paper, wearables, virtual reality headsets, screen-based art, 360-degree cameras, projection, etc.). Potential outcomes are 3D models (both real-life objects and virtual environments), 2D digital designs (for functional or artistic application), UVM’s FabLab output, moving image creation, and artist visits / exhibitions. This is an intermediate art course in the discipline of digital art. Prerequisites: ARTS 1010, ARTS 1100, or ARTS 1400.

Section Expectation

The Objective of this course is to build upon your studio practice by enhancing digital skill sets. Students are expected to challenge their learning curve in several ways via assigned readings, lectures, online tutorials, and self-exploratory research; then relate to their studio work through class inquiry and discussion. We are following Catamount Core guidelines regarding work required for a three-credit hour course, a minimum of ten hours a week of work is expected. Time must be spent on producing media work with clear objectives and persistence to achieve positive results.

Evaluation

A portfolio of artwork that manifests engagement with digital media as it relates to 2D and 3D virtual and physical object creation. Project Assignments are centered on tutorial-based workflows and self-motivated research so that one’s artistic vision can be realized. Each assignment has specific requirements to achieve foundational success in digital design. All artworks will be contextualized within either cultural, conceptual, and/or personalized frameworks, with equal emphasis on structural design.
