Global and Regional Studies: World Wide Pop

An advanced interdisciplinary seminar that examines the social, political, economic, natural, and cultural dimensions of globalization and transnational interdependencies. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals that may exceed four years. Prerequisites: Global Studies major; minimum second-semester Junior standing.

The Global Studies capstone seminar offers an opportunity to apply the cross-disciplinary knowledge and insights you've accumulated throughout your Global Studies major to the analysis of particular problems or questions in the field. This semester we will explore the intersections between globalization and popular culture. We will examine how popular culture contributes to global circulation, exchange, and connections in order to analyze the impact of global popular culture in local spaces, the shaping of a common cosmopolitan culture, the emergence of global youth culture, and the enabling of social and political movements that challenge globalization. Topics to be covered include popular music, film, comedy, celebrity/influencer culture, and activism and we will explore how they are both situated in and move between locations including the United States, Europe, Tanzania, Nigeria, South Africa, Korea, Japan, Australia, Egypt, and Brazil. Students will have the opportunity to pursue a research project on a related topic of their choice.
