Section Description

This class examines the imperial and colonial roots—and current iterations—of religious hatred and processes of religio-racialization. In this seminar, we explore salient issues and theories as well as historical background of religious hatred, focusing on Islamophobia and antisemitism and, pointedly, where those specific hatreds intersect and overlap. Course readings will range over texts in history, current events, and theory (representing both humanities and social science research) to aid students in gaining a greater understanding of these phenomena and categories of religious hatred. This is a class that covers inherently challenging and often violent topics. Students are expected to attend regularly, discuss ideas openly and with respect, and conduct an independent research project rooted in the class topic and theme.
