Art Studio: Advanced Photography

Continuation of ARTS 2510 and ARTS 2520, exploring the implications of photography and encouraging students to use the medium to better understand their relationship to the world. Prerequisites: ARTS 2510 or ARTS 2520; minimum Junior standing.

Prereqs enforced by the system: ARTS 2510 or ARTS 2520; SART, AHST,ARTE majors only during the week of registration; SART, ARTH, ARTS minors will be able to enroll, space permitting, the Friday afternoon of the week of registration Minimum Junior standing; PACE students with permission and override. Section Description: In this course students will expand their understanding of contemporary art photography through readings, research and photographic assignments. Students will be encouraged to develop a personal orientation to image making. We will present slide presentations on photographers, and there will be several reading assignments to provide the foundation for visual assignments. We will use digital SLR cameras but students have the option to experiment with pinhole, medium, and/or large format analog cameras. The photobook as a contemporary photographic strategy and repository will be studied. We will make a series of portraits in the lighting studio employing studio strobe lights. We will work on a long-term photographic project exploring the poetic document, and based on the exhibition curated by Paul Graham, And Still, It Turns. We will have an exhibition in the Colburn Gallery.

This is a capstone class. Therefore, it is expected students will put heart and soul into their work. A minimum of 6-8 hours a week of work outside of class time is required. The course is comprised of lectures, discussions, research, and lab time. Inkjet paper will be provided, but students are expected to purchase analog film and paper if they wish to work in the darkroom.

Grades will be based on the quality of the assignment work (understanding of visual concepts, originality, mastery of techniques, and problem awareness), research assignments, class participation in discussions and critiques, and dedication to self-directed work. Attendance is required.
