About ARTS 2200 A
Topics exploring themes in painting at the intermediate level. Students will learn and work through technical, formal, and conceptual issues about painting. Representative topics: Representing Landscapes; Collage and Assemblage; Watercolor Painting. May repeat for credit with different content. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals that may exceed four years. Prerequisite: ARTS 1010, ARTS 1011, ARTS 1014, ARTS 1100, or ARTS 1400.

Prereqs enforced by the system: ARTS 1010 or ARTS 1011 or ARTS 1014 or 1100 or 1400; SART, AHST, ARTE majors only during the first week of registration; CAS SART, ARTH minors only for the following 3 days; Non-CAS minors for the following 2 days; then all restrictions will be removed; Minimum sophomore standing. PACE students with permission and override. Course fee: $225.00
Section Description
This studio art course introduces students to the rich history, techniques, and materials of East Asian painting traditions, focusing on the art of Korea, China, and Japan. Through hands-on practice, students will explore brushwork, ink painting, stone pigments, gold powder, and gold leaf application while engaging with the historical and cultural significance of these artistic traditions.
Section Expectation
The course includes lectures, demonstrations, and studio work, with an emphasis on recreating Buddhist Tanghwa paintings and applying traditional techniques to a final independent project. Students will develop technical skills, analyze historical works, and participate in group critiques to refine their artistic and critical thinking abilities.
