Section Description

This course is dedicated to exploring the ways TV shows, movies, books, and other forms of entertainment shape people's political views. Students collaborate with Professor Gierzynski to create, design and implement a research project on the political effects of entertainment media. Previous class projects have examined, among other things, the impact of the Harry Potter series on the Millennial Generation, the impact of Game of Thrones and House of Cards on their viewers' belief in a just world, the effect of portrayal of Villains on attitudes about criminal justice, and the effect of South Park and The Simpsons on political cynicism/skepticism.

Section Expectation

The course follows a discussion format; students are expected to contribute to class discussions in a manner informed by the assigned readings. Students are expected to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class, with possible additional time for the semester-long project.

Evaluation

Students are evaluated based how well they acquire and implement the tools necessary for such research. That is measured by their contributions to the research project, exercises to develop those tools, and their research paper describing the research project and its results. No final exam.
