Section Description

The politics of fairness are all around us, yet they are poorly understood. This course will help students develop a guide to different ideas of “fairness” and how they affect politics. Specific cases considered will include climate justice, marriage equality, and Covid-19 mandates.

Section Expectation

Students will learn to understand and explain differences between several leading ideas of fairness (Distribution, Autonomy, Authority), to successfully apply different and conflicting fairness concepts to specific policy conflicts, and analyze how different fairness ideas explain successful and unsuccessful policy change. Students will also have a chance to apply fairness ideas in detail to a policy issue of their personal interest.

Evaluation

Class is taught seminar style, with evaluation based on participation and short writing assignments, a take home final exam, and the independent analysis of fairness ideas in a specific policy issue.
