About ALE 1280 A

An introduction to the world of insects and their impact on our everyday lives, from the food we eat to solving murder crimes.

Notes

Open to Degree and PACE Students: Hybrid course meeting in-person for lecture on Wednesdays from 5-5:55pm. Asynchronous online for remainder.

Section Description

In this course, students will learn the basics of entomology (insect diversity, anatomy, growth and development, behavior and communication, interactions with different environments) and more. The branches of medical and veterinary, agricultural, forest, urban, and forensic entomology will be explored. This is a hybrid course where students will meet in-person on Wednesdays of each week for discussions, engaging with guest speakers/professional Entomologists, an overview of the online Brightspace modules for that week and other activities. These modules will be asynchronous online and include lectures, videos, readings, a discussion platform and an open-book quiz. Modules will become available week by week.

Section Expectation

After completing this course, students will be able to identify the major orders and families of insects, understand insect biology, ecology, and behavior, and appreciate how insects impact life on Earth and make the world go round.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on class attendance, participation in class discussions and activities, completion of weekly on-line modules, a factsheet with an accompanying lightning presentation and closed-book, in-person mid-term and final exams.
