Section Description

This course traces the evolution of Russian lyric poetry: from the Golden Age verses of Pushkin and Lermontov through the modernist experiments of Akhmatova and Blok and the protest songs of the Soviet underground, we will explore the lyric as the most personal and enduring art form of Russia’s literary tradition. Combining close readings and analysis of Russian texts with contextual readings in English, students will strengthen their command of the language while discovering how poetry and song have given voice to the intimate, the political, and the revolutionary across two centuries of Russian culture. Texts will be drawn from the volume Poetry Reader for Russian Learners, with supplemental materials that include historical and biographical readings, music, and performance recordings.

Section Expectation

The course is aimed at students who are currently at or beyond the fourth semester of Russian language study. Readings will be in Russian with some supplementary materials in English; discussion will be in English and Russian, with the aim of developing skills of literary interpretation in both languages.

Evaluation

Readings, recordings, and some memorized recitations of lyric poems and song lyrics. Assessment will also include quizzes, presentations, and short papers.
