Section Description
This course is an interdisciplinary investigation into various language technologies and the profound impact they have had on society. In particular, we will study writing systems and how they developed, the revolutionary power of the printing press, the internet, artificial intelligence, and development of large language models like ChatGPT. For each of these technologies, we will investigate how they were designed to account for the complexity of language, how society influenced their development, and in turn, how society has changed because of these technologies.
Section Expectation
By the end of this course, students should be able to: - Have a broad understanding of the world's writing systems and how they function - Understand the complexities of language which technologies must account for - Understand the importance of societal context in technological development - Understand the importance of technology on society
