Section Description

An opportunity for students with existing visual art experience, and a passion for the life sciences, to design their own advanced study in scientific illustration and/or visual communication. Interested students should identify an appropriate creative goal(s) (e.g. learning or mastering a traditional or digital medium, building complex compositions, understanding data visualization, etc) and consider an area of science or nature that they would like to use as a content theme throughout the semester. A brief proposal outlining these goals, and providing the student's academic background and reasons for choosing this independent study, must be submitted for consideration.

Section Expectation

Based on the student's goals for the study, the student and instructor will design a schedule of appropriate projects together, along with workable pacing and weekly deliverables. Instructor and student will meet for weekly remote meetings, and bi-weekly in-person check-ins. The student is expected to adhere to this schedule throughout the semester and submit work according to established deadlines. The student will be responsible for undertaking their own research (which may include seeking out reasonable in-person experiences, like visiting data or material collections, labs, natural areas, and professionals working in relevant fields). The student will also be responsible for procuring or accessing all necessary materials - traditional or digital.

Evaluation

Individual projects will be evaluated based on the criteria of: Mastery of Skill, Plan & Process, and Expression of Effort. A final, in-person portfolio review will be arranged at semester end.
