Film & Television Studies: Production Foundations

An introduction to techniques and theories of video production. Credit not awarded for both FTS 2655 and FTS 2650. Prerequisites: FTS 1300, FTS 1320, FTS 1400, FTS 1420, or FTS 1430.

This course is an exploration of video production as both a technical craft and an expressive art form. It centers on the fundamental question: What does it mean to create media that unfolds over time? Through hands-on experience, critical analysis, and creative experimentation, students will develop their unique visual voice while mastering the essential tools and techniques of video production. The course is designed for Film and Media Studies majors/minors and related disciplines who seek a deeper understanding of film and video through practical application. Students will engage in all phases of production—from conceptualization and pre-production planning to shooting, editing, and distribution—with an emphasis on developing a personal vision and creating work with clear intent.

This course encourages risk-taking, experimentation, and the development of a personal style. Students will learn not just by doing, but by revising, workshopping ideas, and learning from both successes and failures. By the end of the semester, students will have a solid foundation in the technical aspects of video production, a deeper understanding of visual storytelling, and a portfolio of work that reflects their individual voice and creative vision. Throughout the semester, students will: - Learn to operate professional camera, sound, lighting, and editing equipment - Explore various genres and styles of video production - Develop proficiency in the three phases of production: pre-production, production, and post-production - Analyze a diverse range of traditional and experimental films and videos - Engage in peer critique and self-reflection to hone their critical eye and develop a robust vocabulary for discussing moving images - Consider the ethical implications of filmmaking, representation, and diverse storytelling - Complete 4-5 film projects, both individually and in groups, that showcase growing skills and singular points of view Note: This course is a prerequisite for upper-level production courses, including Studio Art & video production classes.
