Section Description
Among other cultural and material exports such as gourmet food and high fashion, France and the French language are commonly associated with love, sex, and romance. In “French Kiss,” we will explore these ideas as they are represented in French texts in translation and in French film. To what extent is the stereotype that French is the language of love reflected in these French cultural productions? To answer this question, we will read and watch a variety of texts and films by diverse Francophone authors that explore love, sex, and romance. Within our conversations about love and relationships, we will examine topics such as gender change, adultery, consent, love triangles, and women’s agency.
Section Expectation
All texts are in English, and no previous knowledge of French language or culture is required. We will read poetry, short stories, fairy tales, a graphic novel, and novels from the 12th century through the 21st century. We will also examine recent French cultural products, such as advertising and the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated based on attendance and participation, discussion board posts, reading quizzes, short papers/reflections, a close reading paper analyzing literature, and a final paper that incorporates secondary sources.
