About ASCI 3490 A
Focuses on normal equine anatomy related to movement and what happens when horses are injured. Students learn common causes of lameness, as well as how to diagnose, treat, and prevent those causes. Labs are hands-on with horses. Prerequisites: ASCI 2480.

Section Description
After learning equine musculoskeletal anatomy, students learn common causes of lameness, as well as how to diagnose, treat, and prevent those causes. Labs are hands-on with horses. Prerequisites: ASCI 2480 or instructor permission.
Section Expectation
Monday 9:40am-11:40am will be in a classroom on campus. We will use this time to answer questions from asynchronous work, as well as draw diagrams, discuss cases, and watch videos of sound and lame horses. This time will also be used for in-person examinations.
Wednesday 9:40am-11:40am will be at the UVM Horse Barn for hands-on lab work.
Course Objectives:
1. Students gain an understanding of the horse’s musculoskeletal system as it relates to movement.
2. Students learn common causes of lameness with their corresponding clinical signs, diagnoses, treatments and prevention options.
3. Students gain hands-on skills during laboratory sessions, including palpation of important musculoskeletal structures, orthopedic examination, and diagnostic and treatment techniques.
