About HLTH 2531 C

In preparation to become an Emergency Medical Technician, practice and demonstrate competency in psychomotor skills, as required by the objectives of the National EMS Blueprint for Education. Attend Clinical Simulation events to demonstrate ability to lead a team, display critical thinking, and participate in skill-based activities as a culmination of the psychomotor skills. Prerequisite: Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR. Co-requisite: HLTH 2530. Pre/Co-requisite: HLTH 1030.

Section Description

The EMT Skills Competency course provides students with the practical foundation required to perform the essential psychomotor skills of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in accordance with the National EMS Education Standards. Through structured laboratory sessions, guided practice, and competency assessments, students will develop proficiency in patient assessment, airway management, trauma and medical care, and emergency interventions across a range of simulated and live scenarios. This course emphasizes hands-on skill development, critical thinking, and team-based care in prehospital settings. Students will perform skill demonstrations under the supervision of certified instructors and are required to demonstrate competency in all skills necessary for EMT certification and safe entry-level practice. This course must be taken concurrently with HLTH 2530 EMT

Section Expectation

Students enrolled in HLTH 2531 are expected to: Attend all scheduled lab sessions and actively participate in skill practice and evaluations. Arrive prepared by reviewing assigned readings, videos, and skill sheets before each class. Demonstrate professionalism in appearance, communication, and teamwork consistent with UVM and EMS program standards. Meet all psychomotor competency requirements as outlined by the National Registry of EMTs and the Vermont Department of Health EMS Office. Complete skills sign-offs in patient assessment, airway management, trauma, medical emergencies, obstetrics, and special populations. Engage in peer learning, feedback, and remediation as part of the competency-based learning model. Successfully demonstrate all required skills in both formative and summative evaluations to receive credit and be eligible for course completion.
