About ENGL 1730 A
Introductory course on techniques of writing poetry, short prose fiction, and creative nonfiction. Classes organized around discussion of student work; weekly writing assignments.
Notes
Open to Degree and PACE students
Section Description
This semester-long course aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of creative writing across various genres. Our goal is to develop the skills that make or break a writer: observation, expression, modulation, and, crucially, revision. Each student will first build up their skills in a dialogue with the instructor, before the class expands to peer feedback, and, later, the affordances of the workshop model. Classes will be composed of individual and small-group writing exercises; lectures and exposition; craft-focused literary analysis; workshops; and revision exercises. At least one individual conference is required; more are encouraged. By the end of the semester, each student will have assembled a carefully tuned portfolio that demonstrates achievement across genres and focus on one.
Section Expectation
1. Weekly Writing Exercises: Due most Mondays. These assignments are tightly guided / scaffolded
2. Peer Workshops: Participate in peer review sessions, offering constructive feedback.
3. Occasional Reading Responses: A freeform, artist’s response to the reading
4. Midterm Story: A polished story; should represent the best of your abilities
5. Final Portfolio: Includes polished versions of previous exercises and a long piece of your choosing.
Evaluation
Based on effort and progress.
