Beginning with two late nineteenth century texts -- The Yellow Wallpaper and The Awakening -- this class will consider a variety of novels and short stories by both canonical and "should be" canonical writers who explore questions of identity in this country and culture. Readings will range from 1892 through contemporary voices as we explore the question of who is or what makes an "American" writer.
