About ARTS 1400 C

Introduction to contemporary art practice in various media. Explores method and meaning in art making, the role of experimentation, and the translation of experience into artwork. Credit not awarded for both ARTS 1400 and ARTS 1014.

Section Description

This studio art course introduces a range of art mediums and techniques while examining how visual expression communicates ideas across cultures and histories. Students will study the fundamentals and principles of art, learn key visual vocabulary, and practice each element through hands-on projects in drawing, painting, and sculpture.

Section Expectation

Projects (4 total): Students will complete four major studio projects exploring different art mediums and techniques. Each project will focus on applying the fundamentals and principles of art while developing individual creative voices. Research: Students are expected to conduct brief research related to artists, cultural influences, and historical contexts that connect to each project. Research findings may be shared in class discussions or short written reflections. Critique: Group critiques are an essential part of this course. Students must actively participate by presenting their own work and offering constructive feedback to peers. Respectful and thoughtful dialogue is expected at all times. Presentation: Each student will present at least one finished project formally, discussing their creative process, conceptual development, and connection to class themes. Attendance: Consistent attendance is required. Because this is a studio course, in-class work time and participation are vital to your progress
