Section Description

Note that course details are subject to change

This course provides an examination and critique of psychological theories, methods and research about gender using an intersectional framework. We will explore social, situational, individual, and biological explanations of gender similarities and differences and their development. We will compare alternative—and sometimes contradictory—explanations of the selected phenomena. Case examples will come from the areas of cognition, emotion, communication, relationships, and health and well-being. A sub-theme will be the embeddedness of psychological theories and research about gender in history, culture, society, and systems of power. We will also consider the broader implications of research findings.

Section Expectation

This is an experiential course that involves active learning activities and discussions, as well as mini-lectures. We will work together to build our facilities for thinking critically and communicating about psychological theory and research on gender. Active class participation, including in-class discussion and Yellowdig contributions, is critical for helping all students meet the learning goals of the course. Please come to class having completed the readings/assignments for the day. Be prepared to actively contribute to in-class discussions.

Evaluation

Grades are based on participation (Yellowdig and in-class), critical reflection assignments, and a semester-long writing assignment.
