Section Description

This studio course is an introduction to and practice of the fundamental principles of drawing. Through the exploration of a variety of media, students will develop visual awareness, coordination of perceptual and manual skills, and an understanding of the creative process, focusing on observational and pictorial representation. Students will develop visual language paired with an expansion of verbal skills, and vocabulary. Individual and group critiques, slide presentations, assigned readings and gallery/museum visits may complement regular class meetings. Students will learn a linear progression of drawing techniques including (but not limited to) comparative measuring, blocking, value, perspective, and portraiture, using graphite, charcoal, ink, and collage.

Section Expectation

Students will be expected to challenge themselves and push the limits of their abilities and ideas. Natural talent (or lack thereof) is irrelevant – each student will be graded on their personal progress and growth. Students will finish the semester with foundational skills enabling them to progress as artists in more advanced courses.

Evaluation

Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of drawing, including visual vocabulary, and technical sensibility towards composition and materials.
