Section Description
This course will introduce students to the works of medieval art, covering a period between approximately 250 and 1500. We will discuss painting, sculpture, architecture, manuscript illumination, and graphic arts. Medieval visual and material culture will be considered within the framework of socio-political developments, rapid urban growth, the flowering of monastic culture, the rise of universities, and changes in devotional practices. In addition to examining and discussing works of art, students will additionally read and discuss (translated) medieval texts.
Section Expectation
After completing this course, students will have a better understanding of the medieval period, and will be able to identify and understand works of medieval art in their social and cultural contexts. Regular attendance at lectures, completion of reading assignments, and participation in discussions will allow students to develop the critical visual and textual language necessary for recognizing important themes of medieval art, and engaging effectively with primary and secondary sources.
