Section Description

Markets connect buyers and sellers. Public policy seeks to address market failures and inequitable access to resources. Consumers—better known as people—are in the middle of it all. In this course, we will explore the dynamic connections between consumers, markets, and public policy. Using case studies on critical policy issues, we will seek to understand key concepts of economics and public policy. People come together in communities, businesses, governments, and organizations to solve problems. This semester, we will do a deep dive into four current issues at the intersection of markets, policies, and people: fast fashion/consumerism, social media and data privacy, climate change, and the housing crisis. For each topic we will explore the history and dynamics of the problem while introducing key theoretical concepts from economics and other relevant fields. By the end of the semester, you will have a stronger understanding of the complex dynamics that have created these issues and have yet to be solved. You will have the opportunity to develop analytical skills to become one of the solvers.
