About EDML 5700 OL1
Contemporary middle level schools are structured specifically to respond to the unique nature of young adolescents. Explores these structures in relation to middle schoolers' developmental and cultural needs. Topics include personalization, teaming, grouping, scheduling, transition planning, and family involvement. Credit not awarded for both EDML 5700 and EDML 3700.

Section Description
In this course, we will research and envision middle school structures and practices that promote anti-oppressive, culturally, and developmentally responsive middle schools. Topics include culturally responsive/sustaining middle schools, democratic schools, teaming, scheduling, grouping, advisory, family engagement, digital tools, and transition planning. We will examine each of these topics through three lenses: 1) developmental responsiveness, 2) cultural responsiveness, and 3) social justice. Course participants will distill course topics into a Socially Just Middle Grades Organization Crosswalk, which they will then use to inform the creation of a Middle Grades Team Website. Each student will also pursue a research project of personal and professional interest related to one of our course topics. Through each of these assignments, course participants will experience the many decisions required of socially just, developmentally and culturally responsive 21st century middle grades teachers. This course is designed for graduate students and in-service practitioners who are seeking a middle grades teaching endorsement.
Essential Questions:
1) How can I apply research-based middle grades practices to envision a middle school team that is developmentally and culturally responsive to a diverse population of young adolescents?
2) How can I address/disrupt equity issues that may arise within a middle school team?
Evaluation
Your grade for this course will be based on your proficiency in the learning objectives for this course. Each assignment you complete this semester has been designed to assess your proficiency in one or more of the course learning objectives. Throughout the semester, as you complete assessments, you will be provided with ongoing feedback, and you will have multiple opportunities to revise work to demonstrate proficiency.
