Section Description

CDAE 2870 is a 1-credit field course in St Lucia. To enroll in this course, you must have taken CDAE 2860 and have received instructor permission.

CDAE 2860 is a 3-credit project-based, international service-learning (ISL) course with a focus on the community and economic development of small island developing states (SIDS). Students are expected to have had previous coursework in economics, including at least one of the following: ECON 1400, ECON 1450, CDAE 1610, and ENVS 2950 or similar. Students should have an introductory understanding of project management and community development. Students registered for CDAE 2860 are required to enroll in CDAE 2870 during the winter semester.

During the fall semester (CDAE 2860, 3 credits), students are introduced to some of the socio-economic factors impacting small island development in the Caribbean and possible solutions through coursework and readings. Special attention is paid to the small island state of St Lucia, its place in the Caribbean Single Market, and the world economy. We will also investigate the challenges of creating sustainable development policies while meeting the needs of a growing population and remaining competitive in the region. During this time, students are tasked with planning and organizing service-learning projects, which will be carried out during the field portion of the course. UVM has long-standing relationships with a variety of government and community partners. These partners have identified specific community needs, which the projects will address.

During the winter field portion of the course in St Lucia (CDAE 2870, 1 credit), students will implement the projects in close collaboration with local government and community partners. Instructors will take the role of “facilitators,” offering structure and support while encouraging students to (a) demonstrate accountability and (b) apply curriculum-informed knowledge, concepts, and skills to complete the projects.

If you have any questions about the course, please email Kevin Stapleton <Kevin.Stapleton@uvm.edu>.

There is a course fee that is billed when you enroll.
