Causes, conduct, and consequences of global war from 1931 to 1945, including social, economic, political, and diplomatic as well as military aspects. Prerequisite: Three hours of History.

Section Description

This course will examine the history of World War II from the standpoint of world history, discussing the ways in which a series of regional struggles merged over time into a truly global conflict. Amongst other topics, we will look at the origins of the wars in Europe and in Asia; the place and weight of the war between the Axis powers and the Soviet Union; and the impact of war on colonial Africa, British-ruled India, and Latin America. We will also discuss the ways in which the war shaped the postwar world; think about the global war as a "total" war; and talk about the place and meaning of the Holocaust.

Evaluation

Students will write four analytical essays during the semester. There are no in-class exams or pop-up quizzes etc.
