About HSCI 1200 OL1
Provides an appreciation for antiracist health-professionalism by examining the intersection of racism and healthcare and how this intersection shapes the way we treat and interact with one another across a wide spectrum of differing identities.

Section Description
In this course, students will learn the difference between racism and antiracism, and how to examine the intersection of racism and healthcare within the United States by identifying policies, ideologies and the systems of power that give rise to racist behaviors, stereotypes, and ideas that shape how we treat and interact with one another across a spectrum of identities, geographies and class standings. By widening our understanding of racism beyond inter-personal and inter-professional relationships that reflect institutional racial inequities, students will learn how to identify and address the well-documented racial inequality present in the current healthcare system. Through discussion, writing, and quizzes designed to demonstrate how racism currently impacts the health of all individuals and communities, and particularly traditionally underrepresented and racially targeted people, this course will highlight the value of choosing to be an antiracist healthcare professional. By using an antiracist framework for our own behaviors and ways of knowing, students will gain an appreciation for antiracist health-professionalism as they advance in both their academic and professional careers.

Articulate and examine personal biases and assumptions as they relate to healthcare as a site of institutionalized racism in the United States Describe how one’s own identity and racial biases impact communication and relationships between diverse individuals across various healthcare disciplines Identify potential sites for the implementation of antiracist policies as a means of social justice and achieving better health outcomes for all Describe the dynamics and benefits of an antiracist healthcare system Explain how antiracist professional skills can lead to high-quality patient care for people of all races, classes, ethnicities, and gender identities through the creation of antiracist policies
