Section Description

This course is designed to study melody, harmony, and formal structures of tonal music, primarily of the 17th and 18th centuries. MU 2313 builds upon the materials studied in MU 2310 Harmony and Form I or MU 2320 Jazz Harmony, and topics include counterpoint, voice-leading, phrase structure and motives, diatonic sequences, modulation, small forms, mode mixture and the study of related repertoire. Analysis and composition exercises facilitate study. A textbook such as The Musician’s Guide to Theory and Analysis, 3rd ed., by Jane Piper Clendinning and Elizabeth Marvin is used. The accompanying workbook and anthology might also be used.

Section Expectation

It is assumed that students have completed MU 2310 or MU 2320. All music majors in MU 2313 are expected to enroll concurrently in MU 2314 Harmony and Form Lab II.

Evaluation

There are written assignments, quizzes, and exams.
