About BIOC 3001 ZRA

Provides a broad introduction to the field of biochemistry. Students will explore the molecular basis and chemical principles of biochemistry pertinent to living systems. This course is taught by LCOM faculty and emphasizes the relevance of biochemistry to health, disease, physiology and medicine. Prerequisites: CHEM 1150, CHEM 1580, CHEM 1550, CHEM 2585, or equivalent; BIOL 1450, BCOR 1450, BCOR 2500, or equivalent.

Section Description

The purpose of the course is to explore and comprehend the four biochemical core concepts defined by the ASBMB: • (i) Energy is required by and transformed in biological systems. • (ii) Macromolecular structure determines function and regulation. • (iii) Information storage and flow are dynamic and interactive. • (iv) Discovery requires objective measurement, quantitative analysis, and clear communication.

Section Expectation

Prerequisites: one semester of organic chemistry (CHEM 1150/1152, CHEM 1500/1550, 1150, CHEM 1580/1582, CHEM 2580, or equivalent) & one semester of biology (BIOL 1450, BCOR 1450, BCOR 2500, or equivalent).
