About HSCI 2100 A
Explores global health and global health challenges affecting people primarily in developing or resource-constrained countries. Prerequisite: Minimum Sophomore standing. Cross-listed with: ANTH 2191.
Notes
HSCI, PHS, RADT majors only during the week of registration; then any student may enroll, space permitting; Cross-listed with ANTH 2191, 35 seats for HSCI/PHS/RADT 25 seats for ANTH (60 enrollment cap total).
Section Description
Four core topics will be examined: • What is global health • Global inequities and the determinants of global health, • Burden and distribution of morbidity and mortality • Outcomes of global health interventions. Topics are examined through the lens of how global health issues and global health policy responses are shaped by global ties, tensions and economies.
Section Expectation
Objectives covered in this course 1. Describe the principles of global health. 2. Describe the burden and distribution of morbidity and mortality globally in terms of the major indicators used in global health. 3. Assess the various influences and factors (e.g. economic, political, societal, cultural) that impact global health programs, interventions, and health outcomes. 4. Explain the determinants of health in relation to the global burden of disease as they apply to global health status . 5. Identify specific examples of effective public health strategies and the multiple disciplines that intersect at the global level 6. Outline existing and future international resources and strategies influencing global health.
Evaluation
Quiz, final exam, group presentation, in-class participation, and written assignments.
